I HAVE 20 YEARS WORKING ON FOOD, LAND USE AND CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE DIETS.

In March 2020 I stepped back from working for a large organisation as my wife wanted to go back to work full time and with COVID-19 I became primary carer and teacher for my children. At the same time, I set up Nourishing Food Systems, a consultancy specialising in policy, thought leadership and strategy development.  Currently I am working with Merchant Gourmet to advise on their sustainable nutrition and communications strategies, Greenpeace, helping to identify the future roles alternate meat and industrial livestock industries and the Changing Markets Foundation on the second phase of their methane and livestock campaign.

Throughout 2021 I led the development of Action Against Hunger’s (AAH) global policy and advocacy strategy on climate change, food and nutrition. This included working with the Disaster Emergency Committee, FCDO and DEFRA and international engagement primarily with UNFCC, FAO, UNEP. This work was completed in December 2021. I worked with Nourish Scotland on the Glasgow Dialogues, a set of local dialogues between farmers, government and civil society to create a just transition to deliver future food security. This culminated in a global dialogue at COP26.  I was engaged by WWF’s European Policy Office to identify their role and strategy, sustainable food systems and nutrition. I worked with Chatham House and the FCDO on UK trade, food and nutrition security and the developing world, and with McDonalds UK and Organix.

I am an advocate for sustainable diets. I have championed them since 2009, when at WWF I was the first person identify them as a key element of a sustainable food system. Over the next 10 years, I built a program of work in the UK, Europe and globally and  developed the concept. I built teams, the evidence base and secured partnerships. Sustainable diets remain a core pare of WWF's food strategy.

I am a highly effective communicator and provide food systems talks and presentation for a variety of audiences . I have spoken at the UN, the EU and Scottish Parliaments, the House of Lords and workshops with organisations like WBCSD, Tesco and Nestle and at festival such as Camp Bestival and Shambalaa.


I write blogs, newspaper and magazine articles and have been interviewed on TV, Radio and for podcasts. I advised on WWF’s and Netflix’s “Our Planet” documentary. At AAH I wrote for Newsweek
